Peru's most important relationship is with the USA, its main source of aid and the most influential power in Latin America. Cooperation with the USA also extends to the war on cocaine, although the policy of eradicating the crop in the Andean foothills has largely failed; Peruvian coca production has been rising rather than falling. Peru is eager to strengthen its regional links, and those with countries on the Pacific Rim, especially Japan.
